"Solid Gold" Syrah2010
Voluptuous - GOLD Medal Winner
Our first Syrah, Solid Gold won a Gold medal at the 2014 San Francisco International Wine Competition. A voluptuous and full bodied Syrah, made with juice grown in the Santa Barbara area of California, Solid Gold quickly became one of our favorities. In the spring of 2010 we had successfully made both Cabernet and Zinfandel. Time to try something new we thought. Why not Syrah? Syrah is a declicious grape, but widely misunderstood by many and is difficult to sell commercially. But we love Syrah! We sourced our Syrah grapes from Santa Barbara County, California, where the Pacific ocean marine influences are perfect for growing Syrah. The result was exception - so much so that in 2014 our Syrah won a Gold Medal at the 2014 San Francisco International Wine competition.
WINEMAKER & TASTING NOTES
A voluptuous, full bodied Syrah crafted with grapes from the White Hawk Vineyard in Santa Barbara County, California. This wine opens with aromas of black leather and oak which evolves into vanilla and blackberries. A well balanced wine with strong core acidity complimented by flavors of anise, blackberries and vanilla, it finishes with firm tannins. Aged 23 months in new French oak and 10 months in neutral oak, this is a well structured wine that will age nicely.
VINEYARD: White Hawk
White Hawk Vineyard sits on the southern facing slope of Cat Canyon some 21 miles from the Pacific and 2 miles north of the tiny town of Los Alamos. The marine influence causes cool, early morning fogs to envelop the site before giving way to bright sun. It’s planted at an elevation of 900 feet on pure sands that immediately drain off water and nutrients forcing the vines to work extra-hard to survive. The Syrah has a strong core of acidity complemented by elements of meat and blackberries. White Hawk is custom-farmed using sustainable and primarily organic viticulture methods. The yields here are miniscule and the berries intense.
