"BenchMark" Cabernet Sauvignon2012
A beautiful, smooth easy drinking Gold Medal Cab!
GOLD MEDAL - San Francisco International Wine Competition
BenchMark is a Gold Medal winning Cabernet blend with excellent structure and silky smooth tannins that bustles with dark berry flavor. This Cabernet is everything you would expect from a Napa Cab - and more!
Our 2012 Cabernet blend was crafted by blending cabernet fruit from 3 distinct vineyards. Unlike our 2011 “Bold Experiment”, which blended 3 vineyards from mountain top to valley floor, we focused 2012 with a bit more mountain side. 2 of the Vineyards in this blend – Rutherford Bench and Broken Rock, are “benchland” vineyards, vines which grow on the side of the mountain and which allow fruit to have the best of both worlds by exhibiting some mountain structure (found in mountain top fruit) as well as the rich flavor found in valley grown fruit. To round out this beautiful wine we added a Vineyard on the valley floor. This wine is getting better with age and surely will set a new “bench mark” for Platinum Crush to exceed!
Blending affords the winemaker the ability to create unique flavors by combining fruit with distinct profiles.
Our 2012 “BenchMark” Cabernet is a blend of fruit from 3 world class vineyards. We started with fruit from the Hoopes Ranch, a vineyard located in Oakville in the Napa valley. This 10 acre vineyard has been farmed since 1983 and is known for producing superb qualify fruit, imparting bright bold color and bright fruit flavor. The rich soils of the Napa valley produce gorgeous plump dense fruit that is superb for wine making. Hoopes fruit ripe flavors of black cherry, berry and currant, soft tannins, with well-balanced acidity.
We blended the hoopes valley floor grapes with wine from 2 different benchland vineyards, Broken Rock and Rutherfod Bench. Benchland vineyards typically sit on the side of the mountain, and deliver the best of the rich valley floor fruit and the structure and concentration of mountain top fruit.
Rutherford Bench, located in Rutherford, Napa, sits in the afternoon shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains. Rutherford is widely considered as the “sweet” spot for Cabernet in Napa Valley. The wine from this benchland sight consistently delivers saturated berry-like flavors, silky tannins and an intriguing aromatic element often referred to as “Rutherford Dust”.
Our BenchMark Cab rounds out beautify with fruit from the Broken Rock Vineyard, a 48 acre benchland vineyard that is just off Silverado trail at the base of Atlas peak. Broken Rock fruit truly delivers the promise of benchland fruit with hill side structure and rich valley floor flavor. Broken Rock is a very low fertility soil (hence its name) and therefore produces hugely concentrated fruit with purple black color and ripe dark fruit aromatics.
Each of these vineyards produce award-winning cabernet wine, and brining these vineyards together in “BenchMark” has allowed us to craft an exceptional unique limited production cabernet blends which we think you will love!
